Summary

A unique and compelling presence in the world of postwar Western-style painting in Japan,
Rey Camoy (1928–1985) continues to attract an avid following. Camoy was a Nagasaki native from Tabira-cho, Hirado – also his father’s hometown. This exhibition, comprising works (including some never before shown pieces) from the Kasama Nichido Museum of Art, Hiroshima Museum of Art, Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, and the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum spans Camoy’s entire career. His works deal head-on with the dark shadows that dwell within our inner being, such as loneliness, anxiety, and a fear of death. They provide us with insights into our lives that are even more profound for the chaotic circumstances of the present day.
